Oh how we hope this is true - rumor has it Audi is bringing an electric version of the awesome R8 to the Frankfurt Motor Show and parking it alongside a drop-top.

Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport says Audi will finally unveil the R8 Spyder at the show. French moto-mag L’Automobile says it will be available with the 4.2-liter V8 producing 420 horsepower or the lovely 5.2-liter V10 good for 525.

As if that weren’t cool enough, Auto Motor says Audi also has an R8 EV concept headed to Frankfurt. No one’s got any details, so it isn’t clear whether the car will be a full electric or a hybrid. It wouldn’t be the first time Ingolstadt has experimented with making its mid-engine supercar more eco-friendlier. It showed off the tire-shredding, 24-mpg 12-cylinder R8 TDi at the Detroit auto show in 2008.
