2010 Kia Soul: Yes, Judge It On Looks Alone

If your first glance at a 2010 Kia Soul doesn't turn you off, then you're just the person the Soul is looking for. The Soul is the latest in the boxy-style compact utility vehicle. At first glance, it doesn't look like a family car, but it sure can be, if you like this vehicle. The Kia Soul certainly makes a statement about the type of person it wants to attract. The good thing is that Kia seems to know that person well, and carries those same attitudes throughout the vehicle.

TuningTruck.com has gathered tons of feedback from both professional reviewers and everyday drivers that all overwhelmingly appreciate the ergonomic design on the interior. Stash space is clever, and the placement of just about everything is nicely within reach. I like hearing this because it's important for you to feel comfortable while driving, especially with children in the vehicle. Marty Padget's review of the Kia Soul points out that visibility is as important to safety as other features like traction control. I'll argue that ergonomics go a long way to helping you drive better, too, and the Soul wins on both points. With the upright driving position and big windows, it's much easier to see what's coming at you. The one exception is the pillars in the rear corners that separate the back window from the rearward side windows. It's a little thick, but once you're aware of it, you know to plan for it.

Speaking of safety, IIHS and NHTSA haven't yet completed their tests, but the Soul earned top safety ratings in Europe.

The Kia Soul is a solid five-seater, which means that two car seats should fit nicely in the rear seat. Lanky teenagers might have to get comfy with a view of their knees, since it is a compact vehicle. The cargo space is about 20 cubic feet smaller than the Scion xB, so you should still be able to stow the stroller and diaper bag and still be able to breathe. Hockey gear and teenagers might be pushing it a bit, so if your children are older, be sure to take them with for a test drive. They still might put up with it to be in a slightly cooler vehicle, depending on the particular teenage coolness factor of the day.

Two shortcomings to note: The performance is akin to a PT Cruiser. It's definitely a looks vehicle, and quite handy around town and on trips. Street racing isn't recommended. That might actually be a good thing if your teenager wants to borrow the Soul on Friday night. The other overwhelming feedback is that the Soul isn't very well insulated from road noise. For families with younger children, this can be fixed by keeping a good supply of Laurie Birkner and Dan Zanes music.

Overall, if you're sick of minivans and have a smaller family, the 2010 Kia Soul is a great choice. Is the design for you? If you read Dwell magazine, I'd definitely recommend you check it out.
