2010 Ford Transit Connect: First Drive

After the Ford Fiesta, the 2010 Ford Transit Connect is the second most lust-worthy European Ford to make it Stateside. Can a small, practical cargo van appeal to big, burly American workers? The Transit Connect occupies the same territory as the old-as-nails Econoline van, but manages the same job in a smaller, lighter, friendlier way. That old Econoline is a hulking beast of a vehicle, stuffed mostly with tried-and-true F-series pickup truck parts. It's reliable and completely foolproof as it's been

Driving a $90,000 Hybrid

s_400_01 So what’s it like driving a gas-electric Mercedes Benz that costs as much as four Toyota Prius hybrids? Pretty sweet, actually. Popular Mechanics spent some time behind the wheel of the new S 400 Hybrid and walked away impressed. The car is noteworthy for being the first hybrid Benz and the first production hybrid to use a lithium ion battery.   Mercedes outfitted an extensively modified S 350 (not available in the states) with a 20 horsepower electric motor mounted between the

Automobiles and the Future of Transportation An American Supercar Unavailable In America

mosler_mt900_011 This is the latest and greatest ride from American super car manufacturer Mosler, but like all the best cars it is available only in Europe. That’s fitting, because this 600 horsepower beast should be right at home on der autobahn. The car is saddled with the improbably long name MT900 GTR XX, the XX denoting the firm’s 20th anniversary. In honor of that occasion, the Florida company made the already quick MT900 even quicker. The first of them will be delivered to

GM Builds the First Chevrolet Volt

chevrolet_volt General Motors started building the first pre-production Chevrolet Volt electric vehicles today. The significant milestone marks the first time engineers are assembling a vehicle that looks like the car slated to start rolling off an assembly line next year. These cars, known as integration vehicles, are key to the Volt’s development because they are used to refine things like driving dynamics. They also get shaken down and beaten up to ensure the range-extended EV is road-ready. So

Jaguar Brings Style To The Lowly Police Car

jaguar_police_xf Jaguar wants to bring a little style and panache to the lowly cruiser, a vehicle that tends to be as tough a rottweiller and as engaging as a goldfish. The venerable British automaker has developed a high-performance “police pursuit vehicle” - please, don’t call it a squad car - based on the XF diesel. Its 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine produces 275 horsepower. Stomp on the pedal to chse down a miscreant and she’ll do zero to 60 in 5.9 seconds. Not bad. Even better, the car

A 187-MPH Hybrid As Fast As It Is Green

Giugiaro_namir_concept Italdesign Giugiaro is a familiar name to gearheads the world over, and its designs for everything from Hyundai to Ferrari are well known. Frazer-Nash, on the other hand, is generally considered the answer to a trivia question, but it was once a respected sports car company. All of those names came together at the Geneva Motor Show to bring us the Namir concept, which combines Prius-beating fuel economy with Ferrari-like speed to produce what the companies say is the quickest, greenest hybrid
